Pendulum Impact Testers for Tests on Metals

The choice for impact tensile tests and impact bending tests on metals according ASTM E436.

    • The HIT450P pendulum impact tester can be used for Charpy, Izod, Brugger, impact tensile and wedge impact tests to all established standards like ASTM E23, ASTM E436 and BS 131. Likewise, all international standards such as ISO, DIN, EN and JIS can be tested.
    • For simple metal applications, ZwickRoell offers the new HIT300P pendulum impact tester exclusively as a promotion package. The comprehensive solution is ideally suited for standardized tests up to 300 joules.
    • The PSW 750 pendulum impact tester can be used for Charpy and impact tensile tests on metals to all established DIN, EN, ASTM, ISO and BS standards.

Operating Principle of a Pendulum Impact Tester

The name "pendulum impact tester" is self explanatory for the function of the machine. A lifted mass has potential energy. This is converted to kinetic energy by the mass being subjected to a free fall. Binding the mass to a fixed pivot (pendulum) deflects the velocity vector. Impact loading of a material being tested is realized at the point of maximum kinetic energy (equal to the minimum potential energy) of the mass. This takes the form of a "flexure test".

This pendulum impact tester is used for examining the break behavior of metallic materials at impact loading. A suitable standardized specimen is loaded in the flexure test until it is completely broken. The work required is measured and is known as the energy absorbed AV. The term "notched impact strength" aK is often used, which refers to the energy absorbed AV on specimen cross-section S; it is measured in j/cm2. However, modern test methods examine the functions of the energy absorbed or the flexural force in time and/or travel (deformation of the specimen). Since thermal energy influences the notched bar impact test to a high degree, this method always depends on the temperature of the specimen. This becomes increasingly important if the temperature deviates from ambient temperature through the use of temperature conditioning devices.

    Operating principle HIT450P

The HIT450P / HIT300P is a universal pendulum impact tester and can be used for a wide variety of different types of test. Modular design and comprehensive accessories make it well suited to the requirements of research, development and quality assurance.

The HIT450P / HIT300P can be used for tests to the following standards: ISO 148¬1, ASTM E23, BS131¬1, JIS Z 2242, GOST 9454¬78, DIN 50115 (withdrawn).

    • Impact bending tests on metals (Charpy, Izod – conventional and instrumented)
    • Impact tensile tests on metals
    • Brugger tests to verify the wear-behavior of transmission gears
    • Wedge impact test to determine the strength properties of structural adhesives
