Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria are usually used as indicators for fecal impurities in water and other environmental samples. The presence of these bacteria usually leads to a lack of hygiene in a production section or to the contamination of water.
In order to confirm the absence of coliforms, the sample should be incubated for 24 hours so that even the smallest germ numbers can be detected.
